Hymenopus coronatus lives in the rainforests of Southeast Asia, where it perches among blossoms disguised as a flower. Females are far larger than males, up to 6-7 cm, and adults live only several months. Its extraordinary camouflage makes it a coveted but slightly delicate display mantis best suited to keepers with some experience. Keep each mantis individually in a tall, well-ventilated enclosure with height for molting and perches to hang from. Orchid mantises need warmth of 26-30C and higher humidity near 70-80 percent, achieved with regular light misting and good airflow to prevent mould. Feed flying insects such as flies and moths, which suit their ambush style, roughly every one to two days. Molting failures from low humidity or insufficient height are the main killers. They are typically calm and can be gently handled, but their fragility and short lifespan mean careful, hands-off appreciation is often best.
