๐Ÿ“– Care guide

The Upside-Down Catfish (Synodontis nigriventris) comes from the Congo basin and reaches about 8 to 10 cm. Its inverted swimming is a genuine adaptation for feeding from the undersides of submerged branches and leaves, and it comes with reversed countershading: the belly is dark because it faces the light, and the back is pale. It is one of very few vertebrates whose camouflage is flipped this way. Keep a group of four or more in 100 litres or more at 23-28C, pH 6.0 to 7.8, with driftwood, broad-leaved plants and overhangs to hang beneath, plus dim or shaded lighting. Feed sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp and some flake, best offered in the evening. It is peaceful, sociable within its own species and safe with any fish too large to swallow, making it a genuinely good community catfish. As with all Synodontis, move it in a container rather than a net because of the locking spines.
