๐Ÿ“– Care guide

The Zebra Pleco (Hypancistrus zebra, L046) is endemic to a short stretch of the Rio Xingu in Brazil and reaches about 7 to 9 cm. Wild collection and export have been prohibited by Brazil for years, and the species is listed as threatened, so responsibly sourced fish are tank-bred, which is also why the price is what it is. Buying captive-bred stock is not a nicety here, it is the whole ethical question. It needs 100 litres or more at 28-30C, which is warmer than most community tanks, with strong flow, high oxygen, soft to moderately hard water at pH 6.0 to 7.5 and many narrow caves. Critically, it is not an algae eater: it is carnivorous and needs frozen bloodworm, mysis, brine shrimp and high-protein sinking pellets, and it will starve slowly on a wood-and-algae diet. It is shy, nocturnal and slow to grow, but very long-lived and readily bred by keepers who match the flow, warmth and cave shape. Keep it in a species tank or with small calm fish, never with anything that competes for caves.
