๐ Care guide
Harvester ants (Pogonomyrmex and Messor species) inhabit arid grasslands and deserts across North America, Europe, and Asia, specialising in collecting and storing seeds. Kept as a colony rather than as individuals, they are among the most rewarding invertebrate pets; a founding queen may live 15-30 years while workers last about a year, and a colony grows from a single queen into thousands. House them in a formicarium with an attached foraging area, warm at 24-28C, with a hydrated nest section and a dry outworld. Offer seeds and grains as their staple plus occasional insect protein and a sugar-water or honey source. Keep escape barriers such as fluon or talc around the outworld rim. Note that Pogonomyrmex harvesters deliver a genuinely painful sting and rank among the most venomous insects by weight, so never handle them; observe the colony through glass and use care during feeding and maintenance.
