๐Ÿ“– Care guide

Pleurodeles waltl inhabits ponds and still waters of the Iberian Peninsula and Morocco. The largest European newt at 15-30 cm, it lives around 10-15 years and is famously hardy, making it one of the best aquatic newts for beginners. Its remarkable defence, forcing its ribs outward through toxin-coated flank glands, is why it is best not handled. House it in a filtered, mostly aquatic setup at least 60 litres with cool water at 15-22C, gentle flow, plants, and hides, plus an accessible land or floating platform, since it can spend time out of water. Feed a varied diet of worms, aquatic invertebrates, and prepared newt or fish foods, avoiding overfeeding. Keep the water clean and cool, as warmth and poor quality stress them. Largely aquatic and undemanding, they tolerate a range of conditions but should be handled only when necessary with wet hands, both to protect their skin and to avoid their rib-spine defence.
