๐ Care guide
Dyscophus species are terrestrial burrowing frogs endemic to Madagascar. Females are far larger and more vividly red than the drabber males, reaching 8-10 cm, and the frogs live around 6-10 years. Placid and slow-moving, they spend much of their time dug into moist substrate, emerging to ambush prey. Their striking colour is genuine warning coloration. House them in a floor-space terrarium with several centimetres of moist, safe substrate for burrowing, gentle warmth of 22-27C, and moderate-to-high humidity around 65-80 percent with a shallow water dish. Feed appropriately sized crickets, worms, and roaches dusted with supplements, avoiding oversized prey and loose substrate that could cause impaction. When stressed they exude a white, sticky secretion that irritates skin and eyes and can trigger allergic reactions, so handle rarely and only with wet hands, washing afterward. Kept calm in a stable, humid enclosure, they are hardy, undemanding, and beautifully coloured display frogs.
