๐Ÿ“– Care guide

Ambystoma tigrinum is one of the largest terrestrial salamanders in North America, reaching 18-30 cm. These stout, fossorial amphibians live around 10-16 years, sometimes longer, and are hardy and food-motivated, often learning to associate their keeper with meals. Their size and personable feeding behaviour make them a favourite terrestrial caudate. House one in a floor-space terrarium with several centimetres of deep, moist substrate for burrowing, hides, and a shallow water dish, kept cool at 15-21C, since they suffer in heat above the low twenties. Feed appropriately sized worms, crickets, and other insects, avoiding overfeeding, as they grow obese easily, and preventing substrate ingestion that causes impaction. Keep the enclosure clean and humid but not waterlogged. Their moist, absorbent skin means handling should be minimal and only with clean, wet hands, as oils and salts are harmful. Cool temperatures, a burrowable substrate, and measured feeding keep this endearing salamander healthy for many years.
